Endings Schmendings

One of my critique partners is having one heck of a time wrapping up her novel. Part of her problem is that blogging and platform building has slithered in and stalled her momentum. Trying to write an original blog and then jump back to a w.i.p. isn't easy. Then there's all the normal life business that has invaded as well.

She's one to two chapters away, but getting the ending right is crucial, especially since she wants to write a sequel or even make it into a series. So she's pulling out her hair, drinking far too much Diet Pepsi, and worrying.

There are so many things she can do with her ending and I know she's worried that she'll chose the wrong one and never be able to go back and get it right. Do you hate endings? Do you struggle wrapping up your novel? Do you write with your ending in mind before you start typing?

For those of you who struggle, I want to let you know there are always options. Check out this alt. version of Twilight. :)

*Yeah, I know this blog post was kinda lame. Once my life is less chaotic, I'll come back with a good one. (good in my mind, anyway)

Thanks for posting this :D I loved it. Gotta go eat some people - or play tennis but that doesn't have quite the same ring to it ;)

I think the ending is one of those things you should have in mind when you begin writing. You should have some idea, however vague and changeable, of where the story is going. The beginning and the end are what I know, to an extent, when I sit down to write. It's the middle that I generally have trouble with.

Writing the ending is hard for me, but for a different reason. It means the end of the book, and end of a part of me. That closure can be scary and exhilarating at the same time.

Endings are so hard. I LOVE the video! When the dentures fell--that was pure gold! ;)

Endings really are tough I like to try to tie them up in a neat little package but there's so much pressure to hit the right satisfaction level and still knowing that if it's done right your reader should still want more

I don't think this post is lame at all! Actually, besides having a rough time with the ending another thread I see here that's important is the blogging and platform and how it can occasionally get in the way of what we all really need to do. . . write! Great post:)

Bahahaha! I love this video so much! "Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Don't speak. You're injured." and "Check out my bazillion abs." So hilarious. I haven't struggled with endings, except the very last sentence. I keep changing it.

Endings are tough, but I LOVE it when I get there. I can choose from several different things, and I tend to re-write it a few times before I get it the way I want it. :)

I always had the general ending planned out, but some of the stuff has changed... endings are a tricky business no doubt.

I have to know at least vaguely how a story ends, otherwise I'd never get there. But for the MS I just finished, I got 2/3 of the way through, then had to go back and reread it all and edit before I wrote the ending, just to make sure I got the pacing (and everything else) right. I quite like the last few chapters, so hopefully it worked :)

Hmmm...I wonder who you're talkin' about. I bet she's awesome.

Okay you stinker, I will write the ending of my stupid book :P

The problem with writing the ending, is that this book started out as a "fly by the seat of my pants" book and then it's evolved into something bigger than I had originally figured it would be (who's fault is that, DIANA?)

So I'm stuck. I've lost my mojo. Blogging has sucked me dry AND I'm afraid of failing my reader. That's probably the big thing--failing the reader. I think about the ending ALL THE TIME hoping some bolt of lightening will hit me. So far, nothing. I do keep getting little ideas, but nothing I feel is "it". I need to wrap it up, yet leave room for the next book (Darn you, DIANA).

Okay, I will write today. I will try. just for you. I've got to get this sucker done.

I was hoping that in the Twilight ending she died.

I usually have the ending in mind when I start - it's getting there that's always the problem for me!

I always have a hard time with endings. Most of the time I write multiple endings and see which one just sort of sticks with me.

By the way, the Twilight video was absolutely hilarious. Loved it.

I agree with Janice Horton, I know exactly what the ending will be. It's all the in between that's a struggle... But when I get there is such a relief even though I know it change a gazillion times, Love the video by the way...

I try to know my endings--or at least have a good sense of them--when I start writing. Only one time I didn't, and it was so bad...

That twilight video was hilarious~ :D <3

The post is actually not lame at all. I have noticed the social networking/blogging life taking over, too.
I have had the fortunate of my characters determining their endings. I plan them out, they undo them.
I hope your critique partner finds her way to the end and is happy with it.

Just stumbled in here and found myself glued to your words. I stayed awhile, read laughed and followed. Come visit me some time, its nice to blogs that are not all about coupons and diapers :)

Yes I do. I know exactly how I want my stories to end before I write them. However, how I get there doesn't actually unravel til I start the first draft.
Blogging does take up so much time and zaps the creativity sometimes. That's why when I write a first draft I alot morning hours just for writing and nothing else.
